Glendale
Glendale is a peaceful working-class and middle-class neighborhood comprising of mostly small apartment buildings, multi-family homes, and attached houses. It is surrounded by the neighboring towns of Ridgewood, Middle Village, and Woodhaven. The original area used to be called Fresh Ponds, consisting of swampy lands filled with various fresh water pools. By the nineteenth century, Fresh Ponds became a burgeoning German farming community. In 1860, a man named George C. Schott was given a piece of the land as repayment for a debt. He renamed this land after his hometown of Glendale, Ohio. In 1869, a real estate agent named John C. Schooley purchased a significant amount of the land and kept the name. Glendale’s population is represented by many ethnic groups with German, Italian, and Irish being the most dominate.
Glendale is surrounded by many cemeteries but nonetheless there is plenty to do. The neighborhood is fairly old, but it contains one of the borough's most modern shopping center The Atlas Park Mall, which was built in 2006. Located on Cooper Avenue, Atlas Park Mall is mostly an outdoor shopping center with various stores, a movie theater, and a health club. Myrtle Avenue, one of the main streets in Glendale, also boasts plenty of eateries, pizzerias, and locally owned shops for people to enjoy. Glendale is also close to Forest Park, which includes a public golf course, horse riding trails, and sports field and courts. Right off Cooper Avenue on 88th Street lays Yer Man’s Irish Pub, more formerly known as Cooper’s Ale House back in the day, which was the pub frequently shown on the famous television sitcom The King of Queens. In addition the house shown in the opening credits of the 1970s sitcom All in the Family is also located on Cooper Avenue.
Lastly, Glendale is part of the NYC Geographic District #24. District #24 consists of over 45 schools both public and private. Glendale is about 6 miles from Manhattan, approximately a half an hour by car and approximately 40 minutes by its only subway line, the M train.
